My ability as an artist comes naturally. I am the child of a painter and a carpenter. One a natural artist and the other a logical thinker and problem solver. I have often been conflicted between the problem solving challenges of graphic design and the beauty of sculpture. Both are very diverse but say a lot about who I am as a person and where I come from.I had an early fascination with clay and as a child would often create projects with playdoe, but found that clay had a somewhat juvenal reputation to it and was teased often that I was playing in the mud.The first crack I had at a potters wheel came very natural to me “you must have done this in a past life,” my college pottery instructor told me. I ventured forward with my love for sculpture and ceramics and found my self falling in love with the art I was creating much like Pygmalion and his creation of Galatea. So this love for art has brought me to the need to create whether it is on paper on the canvas or in three dimensions. Art being communication, often on a non verbal level, where images are used to create reaction is the part of print design that I love.
As a California native I have always been inspired by the natural beauty around me I appreciate the beauty of nature more than I have ever realized. My high school art teacher, mentor and long lost friend once said, “The process of making art and the process of life are inseparable, one cannot move to a higher creative level without moving to a higher spiritual level, as creativity is the bi-product of one’s spirit.” He was definitely right and much like Alice In the Looking Glass, I have found my self looking for a direction in life only to be guided by my own artwork and reflection of life. |
